AMILLA MALDIVES – WORLD’S FIRST INCLUCARE VERIFIED RESORT

  • 23 December 2022

The Amilla Maldives Resort which now has the resources and expertise to welcome visitors with a wide range of physical and sensory challenges, has successfully became the first Inclucare Verified resort in the world. A UK-based company called Inclucare provides the travel industry with inclusive and accessible travel training, evaluation, and accreditation. According to Inclucare, one in five persons worldwide have a major physical or mental handicap, and the global disabled market has an estimated annual spending power of USD 10 trillion.

On November 28th, at a special ceremony hosted at London's Great Scotland Yard hotel, which now serves as Inclucare's first accredited hotel, the news regarding Amilla Maldives, a five-star resort in Baa Atoll, was made. A panel discussion about how tourism and hospitality experts can push accessibility and inclusiveness to the top of the agenda for the travel and services sectors was a highlight of the evening.

The government of the Maldives has expressed interest in the Amilla Maldives Resort's certification by Inclucare, leading to a visit from the minister of gender and family, Aishath Mohamed Didi, who is also in charge of handicap rights. She is currently advocating for legislative change to enhance Maldivian access and inclusion.

In the Maldives, there are thought to be at least 2,000 disabled individuals who are now very unlikely to be able to find employment. Amilla Maldives is looking into how to make the Heart of House (staff area) a more accessible workplace that would provide disabled persons more employment options.
