WITH 649 SEAPLANES IN A DAY VIA BREAKS RECORD
Velana International Airport (VIA) set a new record on January 2, 2024, by welcoming 649 seaplanes in a single day, surpassing last year's total of 635. This astounding performance demonstrates the Maldives' increasing reputation as a top tourist destination. The increase in seaplane traffic is related to the amazing tourism growth experienced in 2023, which saw the highest number of visitors in the country's history. The Maldives welcomed 1,878,537 tourists, cementing its position as the world's leading destination for the fourth year in a row.
As the archipelago nation continues to attract tourists, VIA officials warn passengers flying through the airport on January 7, 2024, to expect significant traffic. International travellers are encouraged to arrive at least three hours early to avoid large lines and probable delays. Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) is the largest seaplane operator in the Maldives, with the world's largest fleet. The new seaplane terminal, a USD 55 million (MVR 848 million) project by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), covers 3.2 hectares.
