CHINA MARKET EMERGES AS THE LARGEST MARKET
According to the Ministry of Tourism's most recent figures, China is now the top source of tourists to the Maldives. To date, 23,972 Chinese tourists have visited the Maldives, accounting for 11% of total tourist arrivals. This is a significant reversal from last year's standings, when China was third, despite previously being the top tourist market prior to the pandemic.
The surge in Chinese tourists has sparked plans for new airline services. Airlines such as Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern, and Sichuan Airlines are now conducting direct flights between China and the Maldives, enabling the expanding migration. Russia comes in following China, taking second place with 21,898 tourists. Italy is third with 21,321 visitors, while the United Kingdom is fourth with 18,078 tourists. India, which was the top generating region at the end of last year, currently ranks sixth with 16,536 tourists.
The Maldives has received 214,470 tourists this year, representing a 13% rise over the previous year. In the first four days of this month, the daily average increased to 7,300 tourists, up from 6,200 tourists each day the previous year.
